Foreigners often have trouble finding their way around Japan, so map symbols are extremely useful. In the past, Japanese map symbols were often criticized by visitors for being offensive and difficult to visualize. Among the most controversial are the hospital symbols (an H with a circle around it), the post office symbols (a modified T inside a circle), and the swastika (often associated with Nazi Germany) used to indicate Buddhist temples.
Below are some new symbols introduced by GIS:
