USEFUL SYMBOLS IN JAPAN

  • Shoshinsha Symbol, or Wakaba – New Rider

This symbol, which is half green and half yellow, is also known as the Green Leaf. New drivers in Japan must have a Shoshinsha, or Wakaba, sticker on their car for one year.

The purpose of this sticker is to inform everyone that behind the wheel is a new driver, who may not yet be familiar with the laws, may not be a skilled driver, etc., and asks for everyone's patience and understanding.

The Shoshinsha, or Wakaba, sticker is legal in Japan. In fact, if a driver feels less confident after a year, they can still keep the sticker on their car. The sticker is used not only on cars, but also on motorcycles and even horses.

  • Koreisha Symbol – Old Man
This symbol is half red and half yellow, and is used to warn people that the driver is an elderly person. From 1997 to January 1, the teardrop symbol was used for this purpose, but from February 2011, the symbol was changed to a four-leaf clover with each leaf a different color (pictured below).

The reason is that in addition to the name Koreisha, the teardrop symbol is also called by a number of other names, such as autumn leaves (Momiji), dry leaves (Kareha), or even fallen leaves (Ochiba), which, although less common, are considered impolite. Therefore, in 2011, the Koreisha symbol was changed to a four-leaf clover in four colors – red, light green, dark green, and yellow.

Drivers aged 70-74 are advised to display this sticker on both the front and rear of their vehicle. Drivers aged 75 and over are required to wear this sticker.
