What is JR Pass?

What is a JR Pass? This is a question that many tourists are interested in when planning a trip to Japan. JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass) is a special preferential train ticket for foreign tourists, allowing unlimited use of the JR (Japan Railways) train system for a certain period of time.

The JR Pass was introduced in 1981 to attract international tourists to Japan and facilitate train travel. The special thing is that this card is only sold to foreign tourists, Japanese people cannot buy it.

The JR Pass offers outstanding benefits to travelers such as:

  • Unlimited travel on the entire JR train network (during validity period).
  • Significant cost savings: Just 2-3 Shinkansen (bullet train) trips will pay for themselves. For example, a train ticket from Tokyo to Osaka costs around 13,320 yen, while a 7-day JR Pass costs 29,650 yen – meaning you’ll save if you add a few more trips.
  • Diverse experience: From Shinkansen bullet trains to local trains, you can explore every corner of Japan.
  • Convenient: No need to carry a lot of cash or worry about buying tickets for each trip.

Who can buy a JR Pass?

This is an important question because not everyone in Japan can use this special pass. Below are the groups of people eligible to buy and use the JR Pass:

Temporary visitor

The main requirement for purchasing a JR Pass is to have “Temporary Visitor” status on your passport when entering Japan. This stamp is usually given to:

  • Short-term visitors (usually 15-90 days)
  • People visiting relatives
  • Short-term business travelers
  • People transiting through Japan

In addition, some other special cases can also buy JR Pass such as foreigners living long term in Japan but temporarily returning to their home country and returning as tourists.

Can international students buy a JR Pass?

The question “Can international students buy a JR Pass?” is one of the most common. However, the unfortunate answer is that international students cannot buy a JR Pass. International students usually have a “Student” visa and are stamped “Student” or “College Student” upon entry, not “Temporary Visitor”. Therefore, they are not eligible to buy a JR Pass according to regulations.

Some international students intentionally use new passports or reissue blank passports to purchase JR Pass cards, however this behavior is considered a violation of immigration regulations and can lead to serious consequences such as being banned from using the service or even being prosecuted by law.

Popular JR Pass Types

The JR Pass system is divided into different types to suit the travel needs of each traveler.

JR Pass nationwide

The Nationwide JR Pass is the most popular type, allowing use of the entire JR system throughout Japan. There are two types:

  • Ordinary Pass: For economy class, suitable for most travelers.
  • Green pass: For premium class (Green Car), equivalent to business class, higher price but more comfortable.

Both types are valid for 7 days, 14 days and 21 consecutive days from the date of activation.

Regional JR Pass

In addition to the nationwide JR Pass, there are also a variety of regional passes suitable for those who only travel within a certain area:

  • JR East Pass: For Eastern Japan area (Tokyo, Tohoku)
  • JR West Pass: For Western Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima)
  • JR Kyushu Pass: For Kyushu Island
  • JR Hokkaido Pass: For Hokkaido Island

These regional passes are often cheaper than national passes and are suitable for travel focused on a specific area.

How to buy JR Pass

There are two main ways to purchase a JR Pass, each with its own pros and cons.

Buy online before coming to Japan

This is the most recommended way to purchase a JR Pass. You can:

  • Buy through official website: Go to the official JR Pass website and follow the instructions. After payment, you will receive an Exchange Order via email.
  • Buy through a travel agent: Many travel companies in Vietnam have cooperated with JR to sell JR Pass cards. This method is convenient for those who are not familiar with online shopping.
  • Buy through e-commerce sites: Several reputable websites also sell JR Passes at competitive prices.

When purchasing online, you need to print out the Exchange Order and bring it with you to Japan to exchange for a real JR Pass at JR exchange points.

Buy in Japan

Since 2017, JR has allowed direct purchase of JR Passes in Japan at certain points of sale. However, the prices in Japan are usually 10-20% higher than pre-purchase online.

JR Pass sales locations in Japan include:

  • Narita, Haneda Airport
  • Major train stations such as Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya
  • Some tourist information centers

JR Pass fares

JR Pass prices are updated periodically and may change according to exchange rates. As of early 2025, the reference prices for nationwide JR Passes are as follows:

card typeRegular classGreen Class
7 days29,650¥39,600¥
14 days47,250¥64,120¥
21 days60,450¥83,390¥

Children aged 6-11 receive a 50% discount. Children under 6 travel free but do not have their own seat.

Compared to individual fares, the JR Pass is very economical. For example, just the Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto-Tokyo trip costs about 28,000 yen, which is almost the same as the 7-day JR Pass.

How to use JR Pass

After exchanging the card, you just need to give the card to the staff at the control gate to enter the station (no need to swipe the card like IC card).

Book train tickets using JR Pass

Although the JR Pass allows unlimited train travel, to ensure a seat, especially on the Shinkansen, you should book your ticket in advance:

  • Book free tickets: With the JR Pass, you can reserve a reserved seat for free at JR train stations.
  • Book tickets online: Since 2020, JR has allowed online ticket booking for JR Pass holders via the JR East or JR West app.
  • Book tickets at the station: Go to the Midori no Madoguchi counter (green window) at JR train stations with your JR Pass and passport to book your ticket.

If you don't book a ticket in advance, you can still sit in the non-reserved seat area, but you may have to stand if the train is crowded.

Train routes and means of transport that can be covered by JR Pass

The JR Pass is not only for the Shinkansen but also covers many other types of transportation within the JR system.

  • Shinkansen train: Most bullet train lines accept the JR Pass, except the Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi and Mizuho lines (the fastest trains). You can take the Hikari and Kodama trains on the same line.
  • Limited Express Train: JR Intercity Express Trains.
  • Local and Rapid Trains: Local and express trains within the city.
  • JR Bus: Some JR bus lines also accept the JR Pass.
  • Monorail: Tokyo monorail and some other monorail lines.
  • ferry: Some ferry routes are operated by JR.

However, the JR Pass is NOT valid for:

  • Subway (Tokyo Metro, Osaka Metro)
  • Private ships (Odakyu, Keio, Hanshin…)
  • City bus

Important notes when using JR Pass

To optimize the use of the JR Pass, you need to note the following important points:

  • Activation time: The JR Pass is only valid when you activate it at a train station. You can activate it within 3 months from the date of purchase of the Exchange Order.
  • Bring your passport: Always carry your passport when using the JR Pass as station staff may ask to check it.
  • Go through the door there is someone: Do not use the JR Pass at automatic gates. Always go through the staffed gates and present your pass.
  • Store carefully: JR Pass cannot be reissued if lost. Take a photo and keep it safe.
  • Ship regulations: Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen line are not allowed. Take the Hikari or Kodama trains instead.
  • Book early: During peak season (Golden Week, Obon, New Year), reservations should be made several days in advance.
  • Flexible use: It is not necessary to use the JR Pass all the time. For short trips within the city, it can sometimes be more convenient to buy individual tickets.

The JR Pass is a smart choice for those who want to explore Japan conveniently, quickly and economically. However, it is important to understand what the JR Pass is, who is eligible to use it and how to maximize the effectiveness of owning this card. Don't forget to plan carefully and choose the right type of JR Pass for your trip!
