In the picturesque mountains of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, you can watch, feed and take adorable photos with six different breeds of Japanese foxes at the unique Zao Kitsune Fox Village.
There are many types of foxes living here such as: Silver fox, Arctic fox,… Foxes get a bad rap for being tricksters in many cultures, but in Japan they are also considered mystical creatures and messengers of Inari Okami – the Shinto god of fertility, prosperity and rice. After an hour or two of hanging out with these little foxes, you’ll be amazed at how beautiful they are.
Surely you will not be able to resist the lovely expressions of the foxes in Zao. Their soft fur seems to welcome visitors. You can freely take pictures with the foxes in some designated areas. These unique photos will be interesting memories for you during your trip to Japan.
One thing you may notice when you are out and about is the noises of foxes. This is not unusual, but a normal part of fox life. Foxes annoy each other and are pretty quiet about it, so don’t go near them when they are fighting, just watch from a distance and take note the next time you see them.
Some notes when visiting Zao Kitsune fox village
When playing with the foxes at Zao Kitsune, there are some especially important notes you need to remember:
-In 2 specific areas, you will not be allowed to take pictures or interact with the foxes, you can only watch from a distance. Because the foxes here are not completely domesticated. This can be dangerous for you, please follow the management's regulations!
- Avoid wearing short skirts when visiting Zao Fox Village. This is a note specifically for women. Because there are gusts of wind blowing through, causing your skirt to sway. Then the foxes will mistake your skirt for a pretty butterfly and will chase after it. So choose the right outfit to avoid unnecessary trouble during this trip to Japan!
-Wear protective gloves when feeding the foxes. The foxes here are quite greedy and not yet fully domesticated. For your own safety, you should wear gloves when feeding the foxes or you can throw the food away.
-Do not play, scream or make loud noises. These sounds can startle the fox and they will reflexively run to bite you.
